Exclusive Guided Tour of the Palace with Special Wine Tastings | Quinta da Bacalhôa

Exclusive Guided Tour of the Palace with Special Wine Tastings | Quinta da Bacalhôa

The tour:

Visit the Bacalhôa Palace, located in São Simão, Azeitão, Setúbal, and discover a privileged landscape with a historical background, which began with the founders of the Avis Dynasty.

The Palace’s architecture, decoration and gardens have been influenced over the centuries by the different owners, inspired by their travels through Europe, Africa and the Orient, or simply as patrons surrounded by artists, helping to transform it into a unique jewel.

Over the years, the Palace has been embellished with walls of 15th and 16th century Portuguese tiles, evoking Moorish designs and a lake house.

From the interior to the exterior, you can see unique pieces from the private art collection, passing through the gardens and vineyards to the lake house, where you can find the first dated tile in Portugal.

In Detail

Come and visit the Bacalhôa Palace and discover a privileged landscape with a historical background that began with the founders of the Avis Dynasty.

The architecture, decoration and gardens of the Palace have been influenced over the centuries by the different owners, inspired by their travels through Europe, Africa and the Orient, thus helping to transform it into a unique jewel.

Over the years, the Palace has been embellished with 15th and 16th century Portuguese tiles evoking Moorish designs and a lake house. From the interior to the exterior, you can see unique pieces from the private art collection, passing through the gardens and vineyards to the lake house where we can find the first dated tile in Portugal.

At the Adega Museu we invite you to discover different collections divided into three thematic exhibition groups: “Out of Africa” is an exhibition dedicated to Queen Ginga and three of Angola’s Landscape Wonders – the Black Stones of Pungo Andongo, the Tundavala Rift and the Kalandula Falls.

“Forgotten Generation” is dedicated to three artists marked by the Holocaust period, felt on the skin and marked on the canvas by the fact that they were Jews: Erich Kahn (1904-1980), Eugen Hersch (1887-1967) and Fritz Lowen (1893-1970).

The outbreak of World War II abruptly interrupted the established career of these artists, who were forced into exile in England, leaving behind not only dreams, but also family, friends and a lifetime of work.

“Portuguese tiles from the 16th to the 20th century” Used so exuberantly and without parallel in any European country, tiles, which proliferated for more than five centuries in Portugal, ended up becoming a genuine contribution to our country’s cultural and artistic heritage.
