After the purchase, in 1986, of Casa Agrícola José de Sousa Rosado Fernandes, of which Monte da Ribeira is part, José Maria da Fonseca fulfilled an old dream, which is to be able to produce wine in Alentejo, in a property full of prestige and history (wine has been produced here since at least 1878) using traditional winemaking techniques.
It is here, in the center of Reguengos de Monsaraz, that you can visit a unique winery in the world, where in addition to José de Sousa and José de Sousa Mayor and J de José de Sousa, the Montado and Ripanço brands are also produced. .
Keeping alive a tradition started by the Romans, more than 2000 years ago, the José de Sousa winery is equipped with 114 clay amphorae, an ancestral and extremely rare fermentation method. In addition to the traditional wine cellar, below ground level, with amphorae and two presses for treading, you will also see the modern cellar with 44 stainless steel tanks and all the necessary technology for the fermentation of reds and whites.
